Press release 1st E.DSO Projects in the Spotlight event

Horizon 2020 projects are the best platform to develop technologies and solutions in order to reach the goals of the green clean energy transition. By being active in several EU funded projects E.DSO is facilitating the interaction, coordination and knowledge sharing among Members and with external stakeholders within key European innovation topics.

In this context on Wednesday 10 March, E.DSO organized a webinar titled “DSOs at the center of Data Exchange” as a first event in the “Projects in the Spotlight” series. With more than 150 participants, appointment shed light on the work of E.DSO to address challenges in distribution operation in new innovative ways which will help shape the energy sector of the future.

The webinar was opened by Mindaugas Keizeris, Vice-Chair of E.DSO and CEO of the Lithuanian forward looking and data-oriented DSO company, ESO. He stressed the crucial role of DSOs for the energy transition, in particular in relation to data, cybersecurity, digitalization, interoperability of the system, as a value proposition for consumers. This was followed up by Mark Van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit in the DG Research and Innovation, European Commission, who reminded the need to facilitate data exchange in light of the Green Deal goals.

The highlight of the webinar was the presentation of the three H2020 BRIDGE projects Platone, InterConnect and Euniversal and their work regarding data management. Under moderation of Pradyumna Bhagwat, Head of Research at Florence School of Regulation the three projects discussed the role of the DSOs in the data sphere, the increased responsibility in terms of data collected by the smart meters, etc. Emphasis was put on the importance of the role of DSOs in the energy transition and their central role to connect everyone. But the speakers also highlighted the need to include all the customers by communicating to them and making them join the flexibility market. The event was concluded by Professor Antonello Monti, Institute Director at the RWTH Aachen University, who also coordinates the OneNet project which will build on lessons from Platone, EUniversal and InterConnect. As one of the architects of the initiative, he underlined the complementarity and integration of a consumer centric approach by the three projects.
