Success Cases
Electricity distribution grids are the backbone of the energy transition. As enablers of this transformation, Distribution System Operators (DSOs) face growing challenges to ensure the security of electricity supply, enhance network resilience against climate change effects and improve their services to meet customers’ needs. To navigate this complex picture, E.DSO members strive for continuous modernisation in network planning, management, operation and consumer interaction.
As part of the 2024 Strategy of the Technology and Knowledge Sharing Committee of E.DSO, in October we launched the Success Cases initiative, aimed at illustrating how DSOs effectively put into practice technological innovation to overcome current and emerging challenges in the power system. The initiative was subsequently extended in 2025 to Policy and Regulation areas of growing relevance for E.DSO members, with dedicated releases focusing on Skills and Customer Empowerment, along with a 2nd release of Technology Success Cases.
The ambition of the initiative is to:
- Exemplify the effectiveness of forward-looking strategies in tackling the needs of European power grids to ensure their reliability, efficiency, robustness and competitiveness.
- Demonstrate the pivotal role of novel technological applications, and remarkable business practices in achieving the European energy goals on electrification.
- Stimulate innovation in distribution network operations, in synergy with the guidance provided by our E.DSO Technology Radar.
The Success Cases contain a brief report, typically a few pages long, that presents a key activity or project successfully implemented by an individual E.DSO member and highlights the tangible benefits delivered for the DSO and its customers. Each Case outlines the challenges faced by the DSO, the developed technological solution, and the key success factors that led to the optimisation of their grid operations.
