DSOs are striving to enhance the efficiency and speed of operational tasks and new cable installations while safeguarding the well-being of technicians. As part of this effort, the Dutch DSOs Enexis, Liander and Stedin organised an innovation challenge to develop a new cable-bending tool to be used in the installation of medium-voltage (MV) substations that would prevent technicians from having to bend the cables manually.
The new bending tool KBW-01 facilitates the bending of MV cables thanks to an intuitive and smooth process that is suitable even for installation in confined spaces such as basements. Initial results from small-scale testing of the tool are positive, with DSO employees quickly adapting to the new process. As the tender for the tool has been completed and an initial order has been placed, the next step will be further scaling up the use of the tool to boost the sustainable employability of operational staff and performance efficiency.
