Traditionally, DSO maintenance activities were mostly based on repair work triggered by customer calls following power outages. Now, the extensive deployment of smart meters in several European countries unlocks new opportunities for improving maintenance organisation. In this context, Enedis started in 2012 the Smart Grid management programme to shift from classic incident workflow practices to predictive maintenance.
By deploying new equipment linked to the advanced metering infrastructure and processing the collected data through machine learning and artificial intelligence, the French DSO was able to implement new services for network monitoring and prediction of network needs. The developed solution, Cartoline, is now used by operations managers to pinpoint hardware failures before they occur and plan maintenance according to their priority. After two years of use, Cartoline has supported Enedis with over 3’000 maintenance cases.
