DSO-Owned Storage

According to the 2019 Clean Energy Package, Member States can, by way of derogation, grant DSOs to operate storage facilities as fully integrated network components. As a result of previous positive experiences, the Hungarian government decided to continue to allow DSOs to own and operate battery storage systems for non-commercial activities. As part of the IElectrix project, E.ON Hungary installed two grid-connected battery energy storage systems at the Zánka and Dúzs sites, setting up a demand-side management pilot that involved 300 households.

The use of the batteries was tested to address voltage stabilisation, peak load management and increasing hosting capacity for renewables and was supported by the development of a local and central energy management system. Overall, the use of the two systems demonstrated significant technical advantages, highlighting the strategic role of energy storage in the modernisation and optimisation of distribution networks.
