Low-voltage networks are facing major changes due to demand electrification and the rapid growth of solar feed-in, which results in a rising number of network-related meter events that can impact end customers and limit the performance of distributed energy resources (DERs). In this context, the key challenges for DSOs include the difficulty in locating network imbalances and affected customers, the reduced capacity to integrate new DERs, and the difficulty in performing robust grid analysis and planning.
To address this challenge, UFD collaborated with Adaion to implement a solution that provides DSOs with full visibility over voltage behaviour and congestion in their LV networks. By integrating Geographical Information System data and measurements from smart meters and other field devices, the solution builds a digital twin of the grid that allows DSOs to monitor grid status in real-time while assessing the hosting capacity for generation and consumption. Following a successful proof of concept deployed across 52 LV networks of UFD, the DSO is now considering the scale up of the solution in line with its strategic priorities.
