The exponential growth of distributed generation is causing a shift in the energy flows that previously unidirectionally connected the transmission network to the consumer. This requires the creation of new network planning methodologies and tools. As part of this effort, in 2015, the Portuguese DSO E-REDES began developing new analytical models based on probabilistic planning methodologies, which were incorporated into their distribution planning power flow calculation tool.
To support the processing of large volumes of data and account for the dynamics of consumption and production for optimal planning, E-REDES adopted innovative probabilistic data analytics techniques. The tool allows for conducting network performance simulations for all network installations, from substations to delivery points at high, medium, and low voltage, and identifying the occurrence of potential constraints. The greater prediction accuracy delivered by the tool enhances efficient network use and supports management decisions, including prioritisation of investments and comparison against alternative solutions, such as the procurement of flexibility services.
