Low voltage (LV) networks characterised by high penetration rates of residential photovoltaic in relation to the total installed PV power can often experience overvoltage problems. To overcome this challenge, the Belgian DSO ORES is investigating the use of Optimal Power Flow simulations and active power curtailments through the SOLORMAX field demonstrator.
After selecting five strategic LV networks, ORES installed communication devices capable of measuring energy data in real time at the smart meter level for the pool of participating customers. By means of a digital twin, the DSO uses this data to calculate the real-time status of the network and, in case of overvoltage, sends orders to customers for the modulation of active power injection. Preliminary results show the strong potential of SOLORMAX in curtailment optimisation and in opening new business opportunities for aggregators.
