DSOs are committed to finding ways to reduce their environmental footprint by adopting circular economy practices, new sustainable and innovative materials and systems that better integrate with their surroundings. In this context, Enel Grids launched an initiative for the design and production of the street cabinet of the future: a secure and modular cabinet with reduced environmental impact capable of housing new components for the digitalisation of the low-voltage network.
The innovative cabinet design, selected among those submitted to Enel’s Open Innovability Challenge, uses recycled polycarbonate and fiberglass and is equipped with improved anti-tamper and ventilation systems. Moreover, the modular design allows for easy assembly, disassembly and installation of new internal components according to three possible configurations. The new street cabinet proved to be compliant with all existing technical and safety standards, and its performance was validated through extensive field testing. The cabinet, which lifetime is estimated to be above 35 years, has become the standard, reference model for all future deployments across Italy.
