Distributed renewable energy sources (RES) have significantly increased the range of voltage variations in distribution networks, mainly due to the significant network impedance and flow asymmetries among phases. The high network impedance at the point of connection of RES is largely due to the design of the network, with traditional settings being no longer appropriate. To address this issue, PGE Dystrybucja introduced a Transformer Voltage Control Automation (TVCA) system that adapts transformer operation in reaction to voltage changes in the distribution network.
Through the adoption of this system, PGE Dystrybucja can proactively regulate voltage values in medium voltage (MV) switchgear buses to prevent overshoots in the network, maintain the required energy parameters and optimise generation. The TVCA system is already active in three MV/LV substations of PGE Dystrybucja.
