Under adverse conditions, photovoltaic generation can cause voltage asymmetries which can pose limits to the further integration of renewable sources, reduce efficiency in energy delivery and shorten the lifetime of equipment. The Phase Balancer developed by PGE Dystrybucja allows the even distribution of part of the asymmetrical current flowing through the neutral conductor to the individual phases, reducing asymmetry.
The installation of Phase Balancers at 20 grid locations affected by voltage problems confirmed an improvement in the symmetry of phase voltages, especially in the case of networks heavily saturated with single-phase connected renewable installations. As the cost of the devices is comparatively low to the benefits they produce, P GE Dystrybucja has initiated new procurement and installation procedures in other locations selected through voltage analysis studies.
