Brussels, 9 June 2026 – Hosting capacity maps are becoming a key transparency tool for Europe’s electricity distribution grids, but their maturity, methodologies and customer interfaces continue to vary significantly across countries.
On 1 April, E.DSO Technology & Knowledge Sharing Committee gathered in Athens for a knowledge-sharing session dedicated to grid hosting capacity maps.
The discussions, complemented by a follow-up survey, pointed to a common conclusion: the most valuable next step is not full methodological harmonisation, but rather clearer definitions, improved user guidance, stronger links to connection processes and network planning, and a balanced approach to transparency that also safeguards critical infrastructure.
In this context, E.DSO considers hosting capacity maps an important building block for a more digital, customer-oriented and resilient electricity system.
The report is structured around five key themes: policy context, map design and user experience, methodology and data governance, security and infrastructure protection, and the role of hosting capacity maps in connection management and future grid development.
